4 Key Ways to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall

Use Your Raked Leaves to Your Advantage

Often, people bag up their leaves and send them off with the garbage. Instead, you should make a compost pile out of them or add them to an existing compost. Mix everything together. Not bagging them will also save you time and money.

You can also put the leaves on top of your garden – between the plants and on top of the bare soil to moderate soil temperatures.

Then, you’ll want to mulch the leaves into the lawn. This will add organic matter to the soil and make it more rich in nutrients. Think of it as recycling a natural resource!

Grow Your Grass Longer

To do this, raise the height of your mower by a notch or two. When you allow your grass to grow longer, it will actually protect the grass from frost, plus, it will also make it more resilient to diseases and fungus. It will also help prevent invasions from mice and various other creatures.

Aerate Your Soil

This will give your lawn the oxygen that it needs to stay healthy and will also allow for proper water drainage. It will also help prevent your lawn from becoming waterlogged after snowfalls.

You can then also take some of your compost and cover the surface with approximately a quarter inch layer to add nutrients. This will be great for the roots of your grass in the upcoming season(s).

Seed Your Lawn

To encourage growth of healthy roots, seed your lawn in the fall and winter. It is best to use high quality products, as they will be better for fighting off pests, drought, and diseases that your lawn could become prone to otherwise.
